The intended 2012 “Mayan Apocalypse” has not convinced most people that the end of the world is nigh. However, it has convinced lots of people to spend a lot of mon-ey on the disaster sector and tourism in historically Mayan areas. Tourists have 2012 prepared
A lot of tourists have already made plans to get to Medico for Dec. 21, 2012, which is the end of the Mayan long count Calendar. There have been thousands of flights for Mayan areas already prepared for the end of the year, according to Discovery News.
During any type of disaster, individuals can get into a “dooms-day bunker” built underground. The Daily Mail explains that many people are either purchasing a spot in one of these or building one themselves. The bunkers could be used for doomsday or for other disasters. You can purchase a spot in a “luxury bunker” if you want from Robert Vicino.
Since Vicino started selling spots with his company Vivos, he has booked 5,000 spots. That is up from 2010’s 100 spots that were booked. They are not cheap though. In fact, every person has to pay $50,000 with a $5,000 down payment for one of them. Pets are free and children are half-priced, which is a bonus, according to the LA Times.
Not the first time
During the Cold War, a nuclear fallout bunker in the backyard, according to the Los Angeles Times, cost about $2,500 in 1964, about half the annual income for the typical American family then. As reported by the Washington Times, the number that was built over the years is almost impossible to know, but an estimated 200,000 had been built by 1965. Underground disaster bunkers have remained, in some fashion, a teeming business ever since.
Seeing more and more bunkers
Radius Engineering charges $325,000 just to get into CAT25, its most popular bunker. The company has been successful in its bunkers, as reported by USA Today. By 2010, it had been doubling sales annually after 30 years of service. In 2009, Radius has 99 percent market share in the disaster bunker market. This is why companies have started becoming more interested in building survival shelters, as reported by a 2009 Popular Mechanics article. Some companies have even used abandoned missile silos for these bunkers.
BusinessWeek reports that “The Rapture” has brought on people to be concerned in the past. Last year, goods and services such as Eternal Earth Pets appeared. This promised to give a loving family your pets for $135 if you were caught up in the Rapture. All of this occurred due to the two failed predictions of Harold Camping issued last year that “The Rapture” was about to come.
Preventing disaster with preparation
Avoid financial disasters with personal loans.
Even though the end of the world might not be here, it never hurts to be prepared for disasters. Make sure you have the proper flood, hurricane and fire insurance for area. It is also a good idea to keep batteries, flashlights and food rations around for emergencies.
