I find it very interesting that this symbol, of all the symbols that could have been chosen, has been transmogrified to become something so different then what it was originally intended to be.
A couple of quotes fromt this site...
"The Germanic tribes who used it attributed strange and mystical properties to the sign. Such a 'rune' is said to have been used by 'black magicians' in pagan incantations and condemnations....To this very day the inverted broken cross--identical to the socialists' 'peace' symbol--is known in Germany as a 'todersrune,' or death rune. Not only was it ordered by Hitler's National Socialists that it must appear on German death notices, but it was part of the official inscription prescribed for the gravestones of Nazi officers of the dread SS. The symbol suited Nazi emphasis on pagan mysticism.''
BTW - this site has a Christian bias...oh well...even a broken clock is "right" twice a day.
Secret
Due, in part, to an anti-intellectualism that is tacitly inherent in modern Christianity, most Christians view any and all symbols not construed as "Christian" as symbols of the devil or evil.
That said elite occultists revel in the fact that most symbols that are used have an esoteric meaning. This meaning is more often then not the opposite of the symbols meaning in the exoteric domain.
So what do you think of the New Symbolism forum?
got to play to my strengths
"If Fascism ever comes to the United States it will be in the guise of Americanism"

Hey, this is going to sweet!
Hey, this is going to sweet! Anyway, do you have some more objective sources on the origin of the Peace Symbol?
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
Mjolnir
The article which started the thread is problematic in that it doesn't differentiate between Algiz the Rune and an inverted cross. The elephant in the room is the angle of the arms of the cross. of course the upside down cross which Saint Peter was crucified on was in mockery of his savior. The Upside down cross is also Thor's hammer or Mjolnir
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mjolnir
which is a symbol of Thor's power and maintaining an equilibrium between the gods (as well a signifying ones affinity to Norse religion)
interestingly enough, Thor was the Norse god of thunder and his weapon would logically be lightning so this would be of interest in our SS feed, though the two runes are different.
that said
the interesting thing about Runestones is that there is no one correct interpretation...the usage varies because the meaning was all but lost over the centuries. Due to the occult revival in Germany in the 1700s they were given a sort of rebirth.
however I know of no definitive translation nor symbolic grounding.
If someone does I would like to know.
I will do more digging on this peace symbol and runes in general. Methinks this has to do with Semiramus or Columbia
