Okay, the movie was horrible but this piece of fiction is great.
The Postman by David Brin takes place in Western North America (Oregon, Washington and a wee bit of British Colombia) during post-apocalypse after the fallout. Gordon is a survivor of Minneapolis after his troop could not hold out a grainer. After some years of traveling he picks up a Mail Carriers jacket and bag and sets forth to surrounding towns.
The world painted by David Brin shows how our society can easily slip into a feudalistic nature and how cities become dependent on fending for themselves. Alas, he describes little on how permaculture can save a community. Brin focuses on the consept tha government (local and state -worthy) can reform as republics.
My belief is that large cities will be no longer habitable by a large population, due to radioactivity or inner-corruption of greed and power (hummmmm). Unless people begin to understand that permaculture ("vicotry" gardens, communal gardens, etc.) will insure a self-suntanning piece of civilization and that über consumerism will dry up our environment and resources.
