I await your produndity. Interesting article. Who would have thunk that this would even be possible. It's a step away from outright admitting that the government reads our e-mail...which is a step away from...
"The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results."
A personal interlude and a cautionary tale. I went on a retreat with my father this weekend and ultimately the discussion turned to privacy and it erosion. I am constantly amazed that this fact bothers no one! They trust the Corporations and the government to such an extent that it bugs no one that they are compiling psychological profiles and travel habits on us! They all retort "well what do you have to worry about...you're not a terrorist ("are you"...I see questioning in their eyes). This is a step closer to thought crimes and the death of the human spirit. We truly are as cattle, blissfully oblivious to the farmers intentions as he loads us up for a nice trip to the slaughterhouse. Part of me actually understands the disgust the elite have over the dross of humanity as they munch their McDonald's chased by a nice acidic coke, followed with their daily dosage of pharmaceutically induced bliss brought on by their chemical Lobotomy.
All the While I cry defiantly into the sky in a vainglorious attempt at escape...

This is the direct result of the destruction of liberal education in this country. Standardization and skills-only approaches to education create automatons that are good at doing a job they have been given. This approach, however, kills the spirit. It murders creativity. It destroys critical thought.
All of those require a renaissance mind. Creativity and critical thought need a certain mental flexibility that can draw on a broad base of knowledge in order to make conclusions regarding the bigger picture of things. The larger the field, the more chance for inspiration. This is the basis of all free thought. This what built the pillars in which our society supposedly stands.
All of this stems from a rigorous liberal education that exposes students to a large variety of subjects from classics to science to art to liturature to sports to etc...
Dimantling peoples' access to this is the real culprit in dismantling our freedom.

"AT&T Statement on NSA Issue
San Antonio, Texas, June 27, 2006
At AT&T, we vigorously protect our customers' privacy and only share information as specifically authorized by the law.
The news media have carried reports alleging that AT&T is participating in an unlawful NSA terrorist surveillance program. Unfortunately, the law does not permit AT&T to respond to those allegations.
The U.S. Department of Justice has stated that AT&T may neither confirm nor deny AT&T's participation in the alleged NSA program because doing so would cause "exceptionally grave harm to national security" and would violate both civil and criminal statutes. Under these circumstances, AT&T is not able to respond to such allegations.
What we can say is AT&T is fully committed to protecting our customers' privacy and would not provide customer information to any government agency except as specifically authorized under the law."
